Bonne Terre Mine opened in 1860. For more than 100 years, the mine was one of the world's largest producers of lead ore. When the mine closed in 1962, water flooded the first three levels of the mine.
Because the mine is flooded by ground water, the clarity of the water is an amazing 100+ feet. Today the first two levels are lighted and afford visitors the opportunity to go on guided walking tours. The remaining levels are used for boat tours and scuba diving. With more than 50 scuba diving trails, Bonne Terre Mine is one of the most unique dive experiences in the world.
