Located a little more than 500 miles off the western shore of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands have captured the imaginations of both divers and land-based explorers. The Galapagos Archipelago is best known for its unique biodiversity. Many species, like giant tortoises and marine iguanas, are found nowhere else on Earth. The islands are geologically young, formed by hotspots and ongoing volcanic activity. Their remoteness has allowed unusual species and behaviors to develop. Much of the archipelago is protected as a national park and marine reserve, emphasizing preservation of fragile habitats.

For many divers, the Galápagos Islands are a bucket-list destination because they offer a combination of wildlife encounters, geology, and conditions found nowhere else. Some of the things that make them so extraordinary include the following:

  1. Unique Marine Biodiversity

The Galápagos sits at the crossroads of several major ocean currents, creating nutrient-rich waters that support an incredible variety of species, including many that are found nowhere else. Divers commonly see:

    • Huge schools of hammerhead sharks

    • Galápagos sharks

    • Sea turtles

    • Manta rays and eagle rays

    • Marine iguanas (the only seagoing lizards in the world!)

    • The endemic red-lipped batfish

  2. Large Pelagic Encounters
Few dive destinations offer routine interactions with big animals. In the Galápagos, encounters with whale sharks (especially at Darwin Island) are common in peak seasons. Dolphins, orcas, and humpback whales also frequent the area.

  3. Volcanic Underwater Landscapes
Because the islands were formed by volcanic activity, the underwater scenery is dramatic: arches, walls, tunnels, lava formations, and sheer drop-offs that create stunning and often challenging dive sites.

  4. Unique Behavior and Curious Wildlife
Animals in the Galápagos are famously unafraid of humans. Divers often find playful sea lions zooming around them or penguins darting by on the hunt—rare experiences for tropical diving.

  5. Challenging Conditions for Experienced Divers
Strong currents, surges, and thermoclines make diving in the Galápagos exciting and dynamic. While this isn’t ideal for beginners, it contributes to the impressive marine life and creates an adventurous, high-reward experience.

  6. UNESCO-level Conservation
Strict protections and limited tourism mean the ecosystems remain relatively pristine. Diving here feels like stepping back in time to a world with fewer human impacts.

Water temperatures range from 73-78°F in the warmer months (December through May) to 66-73°F durng the cooler months (June through November).
