UW-Milwaukee Scuba Courses

For Credit Scuba Classes

UW-Milwaukee scuba courses include scuba training from beginner through rescue diving. With seven different courses to choose from, there is a scuba course for all interests and skill levels. Students can also elect to progress to higher level classes that open the door to a career in the dive industry.

The descriptions below are provided to explain what is covered in each course. Classes are taught at the UW-Milwaukee Klotsche Center and Aquatic Adventures with open water dives taking place at local lakes.

All courses carry special course fees to cover required books and materials, equipment rental and PADI certifications. We have indicated what these fees were at the time of this writing and the terms these classes are offered. Skin & Scuba - Spt & Rec 126 (1 credit)

The Skin & Scuba course introduces students to scuba through academic and confined water training. During these training sessions you will learn how to assemble, operate, and break down your scuba system. You will also learn basic scuba skills such as mask and regulator clearing, emergency air management, and dive planning. The course follows the PADI Open Water Diver curriculum. Although the PADI Open Water Diver certification is not included in this course, you can become a fully certified diver at the end of this class by paying a small fee and doing four open water dives.

Prerequisites: Ability to swim 200 yards and tread water for 10 minutes.
Additional Special Course Fee: $325

Certification: PADI Open Water Diver certification is available with additional open water training and a certification fee.

Advanced Dive Theory - Spt & Rec 289 (1 credit)

The Advanced Dive Theory Distinctive Specialty is a non-diving, knowledge development program for students interesting in expanding their understanding of dive theory. As a high level scuba course, Advanced Dive Theory explores how dive equipment, human physiology, the marine environment, and basic physics come together in the act of scuba diving. In this course, you will learn dive theory without having to qualify for or enter the PADI Divemaster program. However, the course covers dive physics, diving and human physiology, dive equipment, decompression theory, use of the PADI RDPs, and the ocean environment at a level equivalent to PADI scuba instructor. For this reason, this course is ideal for those interested in technical diving, dive leadership, or a career in the dive industry.

Prerequisites: PADI Open Water Diver certification (UWM Skin & Scuba plus open water dives) or equivalent.

Advanced Open Water - Spt & Rec 289 (1 credit)

The PADI Advanced Open Water course is designed for students who have completed their PADI Open Water Diver (or equivalent) course and wish to get professionally supervised experience in areas such as deep, navigation, wreck, boat, and search and recovery diving. During this course you will complete a total of five open water dives, two of which must be deep and navigation. You are also required to complete the PADI Advanced Open Water eLearning online training for each of the open water dives scheduled. Make sure to check the UWM Schedule page to determine dates and times of the open water dives as these dives are generally done over a weekend.

Prerequisites: PADI Open Water Diver certification (UWM Skin & Scuba plus open water dives) or equivalent.

Materials included in the course fee: PADI eLearning Online Program, Lake Michigan charter fees
Other required materials: PADI Logbook. (The necessary logbook is provided to students during the UWM Skin & Scuba course.)

Diver Rescue - Spt & Rec 289 (1 credit)

This course is designed for divers who wish to develop accident prevention and management skills and gain confidence and self-assurance by learning how to assist other divers. By the end of this course, you will be able to recognize and correct problems in the water before they become emergency situations. The course consists of approximately 8 hours of classroom time, a written exam, confined water exercises, and practical application scenarios where you will learn to manage rescue operations.

Prerequisites:

  • PADI Open Water Diver certification (UWM Skin & Scuba plus open water dives) or equivalent.
  • PADI Advanced Open Water must be completed before doing open water dives.
  • Current CPR and First AID training (Emergency First Response preferred).

Additional Special Course Fee: $203
Books required and included in course fee: PADI Rescue Diver Manual with slate.
Certification: PADI Rescue Diver certification.

Diving Enriched Air - Spt & Rec 289 (1 credit)

In Diving Enriched Air, students learn Enriched Air Nitrox (EANx) dive theory and techniques. EANx is quickly becoming the breathing gas of choice for recreational divers who want to increase allowable bottom time, shorten surface intervals, and increase the number of repetitive dives they are permitted. In this course, you will be asked to view the PADI Enriched Air Diver video, attend classroom sessions on enriched air diving theory and techniques, pass the EANx Specialty Exam, and perform a simulated EANx dive in the pool.

Prerequisites: PADI Open Water Diver certification (UWM Skin & Scuba plus open water dives) or equivalent.

Scuba Equipment Maintenance Specialty - Spt & Rec 289 (1 credit)

This course is intended to familiarize divers with the operation and maintenance of equipment. The PADI Equipment Specialist course addresses the following:

  • The theory, principles and operation of diving equipment
  • Routine, recommended care and maintenance procedures, and equipment storage
  • Common problems with equipment and recommended professional maintenance procedures (including a demonstration of repair procedures.)
  • Simple suggestions for comfortable equipment configurations

Prerequisites: None. UWM Skin & Scuba recommended.
Additional Special Course Fee: $95
Books: Included in course fee.
Certification: PADI Equipment Maintenance Specialist certification is included in the course fee for those holding a PADI Open Water certification.

Underwater Photography - Spt & Rec 289 (1 credit)

Digital photography has made taking excellent photographs above and below water attainable to everyone. Whether you are a beginner or an aspiring underwater photographer this is the class for you. You will learn camera assembly and maintenance as well as basic digital underwater photography techniques. In addition, you will learn about digital file formats, resolution, exposure, composition, underwater lighting, and more. If you are not getting the quality underwater pictures you want, this class will help.

Prerequisites: Ability to snorkel.
Additional Special Course Fee: $151
Materials included in the course fee: Digital Underwater Photographer Crew Pack.
Certification: PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Level I certification is included in the course fee.
